What an amazing two weeks we had with Visiting Artist, Kristen Cliffel! Kindergarten and 1st grade parents enjoyed a collaboration night, where they were able to experience many of the things their children had been doing over the past two weeks. It was a lovely evening!
Many thanks to Kristen, who taught us so much about working with ceramics! We want to recognize our school atelierista, Elizabeth Perry, who works closely with our visiting artists, supporting their work and extending it after these artists leave. Our appreciation goes to the Ohio Arts Council, who generously provided a grant to partially support our artist in residence suite of programming for the year. Our heartfelt thanks also go out to all parents who provided food during this time. We so value the delicious food and the time it affords us to collaborate.
We are truly fortunate to have such a great community, one that is also so supportive of the arts.
The March 4th Nature news opened with the question, “Did March come in like a lion or a lamb?”, the April 1st question was, “How did March leave?” I feel it left like a lamb, with its wool coat on.
On our first day back from spring break, my group of five North Side children headed out to see how spring was progressing. They found green sprouts popping up in the gardens, but saw no bee activity in the apiary. The temperature was lingering at 32, and not warm enough for our honeybees to be out and about. They found daffodils, and deer tracks around the little log building, and invasive honeysuckle starting to leaf out. We gathered fallen daffodils from the South Side garden, which are now bringing sunshine to the North Side Nature room.
The deer are still stopping by for breakfast outside the Toddler building; the birds and squirrels are sharing time and space at the feeders. The groundhogs are back in all their glory, and the red fox has been spotted scampering across the drive. Spring peepers are heard singing on warm evenings, and the toads and frogs are trilling loudly from the Preserve. I feel no matter how March arrived or departed, Mother Nature is amazing. – Deb DeCurtins | Overfield Naturalist
