At Overfield we believe that music is essential in the life of a young child. Music brings joy. It fosters camaraderie and community. It brings people together. Just as notes blend in a harmony, music itself helps children bond and strengthens relationships.
We know that a focus on music in early childhood helps children develop an ear for tonal and rhythmic patterns, as well as for melody and harmony. This builds a strong foundation for the development of musical literacy. Developing these skills impacts many other aspects of their life, including building proficiency in math and literacy.
The songs we sing at Overfield are from all over the world and reflect the cultural heritages of the children who attend our school. We use music as a way to pass down story, to preserve history and culture. We believe that music is universal; it transcends boundaries and builds bridges. Music brings people together. In the spirit of these aims, we are working to create a CD featuring Overfield children. We want to include the songs that we have been singing for the 57 years that we have been in operation and which reflect the identity and cultural history of our school.
Please visit our website to listen to the songs that will be included in the upcoming CD. Song lyrics are included so you can practice these Overfield favorites with your children! We are looking forward to showing everyone how beautifully Overfield Sings!
Thank you to everyone who donated to Overfield on #Giving Tuesday! With your help and the matching funds we received we raised over $6000 for our school. Thank you for your generosity!!
Join us for our Annual Night Tree Celebration!
Every year we have a winter celebration called Night Tree which is inspired by the book of the same title by Eve Bunting. The story chronicles one family’s annual tradition of making treats for animals and then traveling to the same tree in the forest to hang the tasty treats. For over sixteen years we have adopted a similar custom. We will spend the next few weeks stringing treats for the animals that live around Overfield. We will also transform the Gathering Place into an indoor forest decorated with lovely creations made by all the classes. Each class comes on a special night and celebrates by singing songs, reading the book Night Tree, hanging the pre-made treats on the trees outside for the animals, and eating treats ourselves. We hope to see you there!
