Nature News

On Monday of last week, South Siders found a small bird nest tucked in a Korean boxwood in the Rainbow Garden, the garden in front of their classroom. It was a good sign, because the children were planting two more arborvitae bushes as future homes and shelter just for the birds.

A group from the All Day class dug up and removed lemon balm plants that are taking over much of the space in the Spiral Garden. There is a never-ending battle with invasive plants at Overfield: honeysuckle, garlic mustard, thistle, and now it looks like lemon balm may be on our most unwanted list.

The Kindergarteners have been busily researching nature topics in preparation for this Friday’s Night Hike. All Overfield families are invited to this special evening on campus, when we will  observe the environment that exists each night while we are away from school. Our Kindergarteners will serve as guides for the evening. Families visit stations that teach about the nocturnal animals that call our school grounds home. And, to celebrate, our Kindergarten children camp out in tents after the spring hike. The Night Hike starts Friday, May 6, at 6:30. Come to the Gathering Place door to pick up a map.
