Nature News

Unpredictable March is now history, and April’s future is looking surprisingly good this week. The deer posse has been visible during spring break, dining and lounging close to the bird hide and gardens. It has been especially exciting watching a pair of hawks soar above the wide-open spaces near the school. The lovebirds seem content to raise their family in a towering pine penthouse at the edge of the park.

The children have been observing a female white domestic duck and a male mallard duck that were abandoned at The Hobart Nature Preserve pond last year. The odd feathered couple managed to survive the winter together. Both ducks were required to be removed from the Preserve, but eluded capture by park personnel. The female recently developed a serious visible health issue, and it was obviously dire that she be rescued and receive veterinary care. Amanda McGowan, who works for both The Overfield School and The Miami County Parks, spearheaded the rescue, along with a frequent patron of the parks who is a concerned fan of the waterfowl. We managed to catch the domestic duck last week and found her veterinary care. She miraculously survived surgery and was convalescing at Overfield. The gentle white duck was able to spend Easter Sunday in our warm sunny vegetable garden, where sadly she unexpectedly passed away. She had many admirers at the park and will be missed.

Please let me note: It is illegal to dump any animals (even native wildlife) in a county or state park. Feeding them is also illegal and leads to serious harm for the animals and habitat.
