Tuesday, January 5, 2021: School resumes.
Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Night Tree celebration! We couldn’t have asked for better weather to enjoy the storybook trail and the magic of the Climbing Trees. All of the local animals also thank you kindly for all of the delicious treats!
The first open-air “Night Tree” event was an obvious success. Last Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings found trees and bushes dripping with holiday treats the Overfield students had prepared for our wildlife friends. The children and their families were able to follow the candlelit storybook trail, finishing the classic story at the entrance to the climbing trees. The experience from within the glowing cluster of trees was pure magic.
Last week ended with some pretty nice weather; a perfect time to check our honey bees and make sure they are ready for the cold months ahead. The old adage “Busy as a Bee” is so true, even in winter. Honeybees cluster and flutter their wings in order to maintain a temperature of 95 degrees, keeping the queen warm. I also fed them a special sugar concoction to sustain the hive (10,000 hungry mouths).
Thanks to Casey, the pollinator garden received a fall cut. I cannot wait to see what Mother Nature will bring us in the spring.
This year is fast approaching its expiration date. I personally will shout “HALLELUIA!” on New Year’s Eve, and keep my fingers crossed for 2021. The planet has taken a beating of biblical proportions in 2020: massive wild fires, catastrophic weather, a world-wide pandemic, ravenous swarms of locust, and rising seas. Credit for the academic transition goes to The Overfield administration, dedicated teachers, parents and the students who have handled the major changes in their class rooms like troopers.
