2016-2017 Overfield Annual Fund Drive
As an Independent School, Overfield relies on Annual Giving from our community to help balance our budget and support the programming and activities we believe are so essential to our philosophy. Earlier in the year, we reached out to grandparents, friends, trustees, and staff who have generously contributed over $17,000 toward our monetary goal of $25,000. Now we come to you, our current families, to help round out this year’s campaign.
You will be receiving a letter and pledge envelope in the mail next week from this year’s Annual Fund parent representatives imploring you to contribute whatever amount works for your family. Our goal for parents is 100% participation. Each year, 100% of our staff and trustees contribute to the Annual Fund. Being able to also report we had 100% participation from our families would greatly strengthen our chances of being considered for additional grant dollars. Please help us reach this important goal!
Many employers also have matching programs for charitable contributions made by their employees. Check with your employer’s HR department to see if this is something your employer offers.
Please contact Erin Johnston if you have any questions. 937-339-5111. Together, we can reach our goal and maintain the quality programming that is a hallmark of Overfield!
It’s time once again to gather, trim, and turn in Box Tops! This is an easy way to earn money for our school. We ask that you submit these to the Box Tops basket in the Gathering Place or turn them in to the communications baskets in your child’s classroom by Friday, February 24th. Thank you!
North America is starting 2017 with some very interesting weather. Locally we continue to receive both tastes of spring and winter depending on what Mother Nature feels like. The children have started the annual tapping of the Overfield maple trees. As of this writing we have three taps set up, and four to go. The job of collecting, filtering and cooking down the sap to pure maple syrup begins next week when the nights are cold and the days are warm.
While identifying maple trees for tapping, we often make a beeline (pun intended) by the apiary to check on our sweet honeybees. At the beginning of the week we spotted quite a few worker bees coming out and taking flight; by the end of the week we saw very little movement. The bees are always busy keeping the queen at the right temperature, no matter what time of year it is. The queen should have started laying her eggs in January and the first crop of worker bees could be on the job very soon, if not already. I am sure the predicted warmer weather this weekend will have an effect on our hive.
Plant and seed catalogs are arriving, and crop decisions will have to be made in the near future. We are looking forward to our time in the vegetable garden and our new pollinator garden.

2017-2018 Registration Information is Now Available!
It’s hard to believe that it’s already time to begin thinking about next school year. Registration begins February 27, 2017 for currently enrolled families and alumni. Families from the community may enroll beginning at our Open House, March 11, 2017 from 1-3 p.m. Each child will receive forms with our class options and descriptions for the 2017-18 school year. Please note a new option for this year, a combined kindergarten and first grade class. We are also offering a pilot program of Saturday Toddler classes for those who would like a weekend option; these will run April 22- May 20. A separate flyer about this program will go home with children next week. We are always looking for new ways to meet the needs and wishes of our families, and are looking forward to these expanded class offerings. Please let us know if you have any questions about class options, and don’t hesitate to consult your child’s teachers about specific class placement for next year.
On Saturday, February 25, please join us at Jay and Mary’s Book Center to celebrate the wonderful world of children’s literature. It begins promptly at 10:30 with songs with Carla and readings of a couple delightful children’s books. The singing and stories last about 45 minutes. There will be a display of some of our favorite children’s books and some lovely images of our children reading. Jay and Mary generously give 10% of the total purchases back to the school. All we have to do is tell them we are from Overfield. We look forward to seeing you there!
