Nature News
As we all know, February is the shortest month of the year, even when we add an extra day every 4 years. February, even though it short and stuck at the coldest time of year, is filled with special events. It begins with the celebration of Black History Month, moves to the largest rodent in North America predicting six more weeks of winter, and then follows with the birthday observance of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Alexander Hamilton (aka Asteroid Alex). Many of us also celebrate Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine’s Day, and Mardi Gras during this special month.
February 11th could be a great time to look for meteors; the moon will not be visible in the night sky, nor hamper meteor viewing through the weekend if skies are clear. Look for the full moon arriving at the end of the month – the Snow Moon!
The children have been taking advantage of the recent accumulation of snow; sleds are out and looking for fun on Overfield Hill. The Polar Vortex that has been bandied about since January has arrived and hopefully will help keep our slopes white.
In 1997 the Hobart Family gifted 82 acres of farmland adjacent to the Overfield School to the Miami County Park District. It is now a microcosm of the Ohio landscape circa 200 years ago – topographical features include a 3-acre pond, streamlets, wetlands, prairie, native trees; the local wildlife call “The Hobart Urban Nature Preserve” home. This natural setting is enjoyed by our children, and citizens of Troy.
“Heaven is under our feet, as well as over our heads.”

Registration for 2021-2022
We are pleased to share information on the registration process information for the 2021-22 school year! Registration for current and alumni families begins on Monday, February 22nd at 8 a.m. online. Registration opens to new families on Monday, March 1st, also at 8 a.m. online.
As the snows continue to fall on Overfield hill, we wanted to remind everyone once again of our winter weather procedures. Please be advised that the children will play outside as long as temperatures are 20 degrees or above. In order to enjoy the outdoors they need to come equipped with heavy coats, hats, and gloves, as well as snow boots/pants in cold or snowy weather. Also, please make sure that your child’s extra clothes are appropriate for cold weather.
We also wanted to remind everyone to please use caution when driving on the hill to or from school. This is pre-treated when winter weather is anticipated, and plowed and salted as soon as possible. Even when treated the hill can be slippery, so please be aware and take the proper precautions when driving in snow or ice.
Overfield families will be notified via One Call Now by 6:30 a.m. if classes are delayed or cancelled due to inclement weather. Information may also be found by watching or logging on to the local news, WHIO Channel 7. If we delay, it will be a 2 hour delay; in this case, Toddlers and Before Care will be closed. School will open at 10:30 am and morning classes will still dismiss at noon, as usual. In the event of an early dismissal, families would be notified with as much advance notice as possible ahead of the dismissal time.
We encourage you to use your own discretion when needed. Your safety is always first priority. Bundle up and stay warm, everyone!
