Please join us in welcoming our first visiting artist, Kathie Johnson!
Kathie is a painter and sculptor working mostly with everyday images and color. She collaboratively works with her husband, Rob Gartzka, creating studio art furniture. Their individual and collaborative artworks have been exhibited regionally and nationally, and several Ohio Arts Council individual artist fellowships have been awarded to Kathie and Rob for their art furniture.
Kathie holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting from Arizona State University, and a Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Cincinnati. She has conducted over 25 Ohio Arts Council residencies and workshops including two at Overfield, as well as at Columbus School for Girls, Urbana City Schools, and Nevin Coppock Elementary in Tipp City, Ohio.
We are happy to welcome Kathie back–she spent 5 years as studio artist at Overfield! She then went on to serve 19 years as visual art teacher at The Miami Valley School working with grades K-5.
She says, “I enjoy sharing ideas and techniques that I use in my personal work with students and community. A residency is a way to create something new. By working together, many individual parts make a whole. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you in January.”
Rob and Kathie have one daughter, Atalie, who is a 1999 Overfield Alumni.
I managed to journey to Florida over the holiday, and was able to spend time with close relatives and some unique birds and animals up close. There was a winter rookery for turkey vultures not far from where we were staying; they would fill the sky and roost overhead in southern oak trees dripping with moss. Of course, we have turkey vultures here for a good portion of the year, gliding through the sky looking for carrion, but rarely have I seen them this up close and personal; they certainly have a distinct odor. Another beautiful migrant from the north, the Sandhill Cranes, were in abundance.
I was on a guided tour of an abandoned golf course when we spotted and were able to approach a rare gopher tortoise; they live in burrows, digging deep down into soft sand. My guide was a young man who said they can live to be 100 years old, and it is very rare to see one. These wonderful creatures’ existence is threatened due to human development. I have attached a photo of the gopher tortoise and my young friend.
I am looking forward to 2020 and all the new adventures the children and I will share at Overfield. We have the winter birds to feed and will observe the wild and woolly squirrels who enjoy plundering their feeders. Hopefully, Mother Nature will send us snow in the not too distant future. I am looking forward to hiking the woods and trails, finding and following tracks, and spotting members of our local deer family. Inclement weather will enable us to pull out garden catalogues, making lists and planning spring projects. Groundhog Day will be here before we know it.
A warm felt THANK YOU, and LOVE, to all the Overfield Families for your thoughtful cards and gifts. Go for a New Year hike!
