The old saying, “location, location, location.” holds very true for The Overfield School, located in the heart of Troy adjacent to the 84-acre nature preserve, Hobart Urban Nature Preserve, donated to the Miami County Park Department by the Hobart family. The Parks offer educational programs to all Miami County schools. The Overfield Kindergarten class recently took a field trip to Stillwater Prairie for their “I’m A Tree” program, discovering the gifts trees give us. To their delight, the children also encountered several native animals, all eager to share their knowledge of the gifts that trees give them. What luck! Later this school year a naturalist from the MCPD will visit the Overfield Kindergarten, along with Mr. Tree, and explain the students’ role in the annual Banana Slug Festival, scheduled in May.
The Bird Hide has a new cedar facade, thanks to the dedication of “Our Overfield Habitat Heroes”, Allen Jones and Casey Warner. As always, amazingly, we cannot thank them enough. The 2nd graders visited the bird hide on Friday, and promptly started to decorate the interior walls with the flock of folky birds that previously graced the exterior. Four Kindergarten boys arrived at the Bird Hide Friday afternoon, and using all their brains and brawn, dug up and removed one of the heavy-duty pipes encased in cement outside the Bird Hide. They were as proud and as amazed as I was. The children have exciting ideas for the Bird Hide during Night Tree. Can’t wait.
Speaking of Night Tree, the Overfield children and teachers are gearing up for this annual event. The long-standing tradition of learning about the wildlife on Hobart hill, creating treats for them, and celebrating with family and friends, continues with all the enthusiasm of past years.
Enjoy the Holiday! Take a walk! Deb – Overfield Naturalist
